How to Find and Install Older Versions of the Better Search Replace Plugin

Many users of the Better Search Replace plugin occasionally need to download and install an older version. This need can arise for various reasons, such as compatibility testing with other plugins or themes after a new update causes an issue, or simply a preference for a previous feature set. A common point of confusion is that the official WordPress.org plugin page does not always make these older versions easily discoverable.

This guide will walk you through the simple process of locating and installing a previous version of the plugin directly from your WordPress dashboard.

How to Download an Older Version

Fortunately, the WordPress Plugin Repository archives every publicly released version. You can access them by following these steps:

  1. Navigate to the Better Search Replace page on the official WordPress Plugin Repository.
  2. Scroll down to the page until you find the "Advanced View" section.
  3. Click on the "Advanced View" link to expand that section.
  4. Here, you will find a "Previous Versions" dropdown menu. Click it to see a list of all available older versions.
  5. Select the version number you wish to download (e.g., 1.3.2). The page will refresh, and a download link for that specific version will appear.
  6. Click the download link to save the .zip file to your computer.

How to Install the Older Version

Once you have the .zip file for your desired version, you can install it on your site.

Important: If you have the current version of the plugin active, you must deactivate and delete it from your Plugins page first. WordPress will not allow you to install an older version over a newer one. Your database changes from the plugin are safe, as they are stored separately in your site's database.

  1. In your WordPress admin dashboard, go to Plugins > Add New.
  2. Click the "Upload Plugin" button at the top of the page.
  3. Click "Choose File" and select the downloaded .zip file from your computer.
  4. Click "Install Now".
  5. After installation is complete, click "Activate Plugin".

Your site will now be running the older version of Better Search Replace that you selected.

A Note on Plugin Updates and Support

It is not uncommon for a well-built plugin to remain stable and functional for long periods without needing an update. A lack of recent updates does not necessarily mean a plugin is abandoned; it can sometimes indicate that the plugin is simply mature and bug-free for most use cases. However, when using any older software, it is always a good practice to test the version thoroughly on a staging site before deploying it to your live environment to ensure it works as expected with your current setup.
